Halloween face paint that’s actually good for your skin?

Halloween face paint that’s actually good for your skin

What if we could formulate a Halloween face paint that is not only safe and free of heavy metals, but could actually benefit your skin? An up-and-coming area of research is exploring the use of microalgae species for the pigmentation of cosmetics. Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms, full of brightly colored compounds that can be used as pigments in make-up. Not only are these pigments safer and less irritating to the skin, they also contain bioactive compounds responsible for anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Many of them have been studied for functions such as stimulating collagen, inhibiting hyperpigmentation, reducing wrinkles, and UV-protection.

The Chemistry of Keeping Cozy

Do you know what’s keeping you warm this winter? Chances are it’s either a furnace or a boiler. The chemistry of boiler maintenance is straight-forward, but absolutely crucial to keeping boilers running smoothly and efficiently. Arguably the most critical parameter for boiler maintenance is alkalinity, which is best manipulated by adding sodium hydroxide. Maintaining an alkaline pH is crucial for three reasons. First of all, the alkalinity slows down the process by which hot water corrodes the steel boiler. Second, it ensures that calcium phosphate is forming a non-adherent sludge that can easily be removed during a blow-out maintenance procedure. Finally, it keeps naturally-occurring silica particles harmlessly solubilized.

Iodoform: How this 200-year-old molecule is used today

Iodoform

Iodoform, also called tri-iodomethane, is a chemical with the formula CHI3. It is an analog to the familiar chemical solvent chloroform, but in this case the three chlorine atoms have been replaced iodine. Iodoform is a crystalline solid with a lemon-yellow hue. It has a pungent, unpleasant odor and slightly sweet taste. It is insoluble in water, but easily soluble in organic solvents. In modern day usage, it is sometimes added to fillings for root canals, especially in baby teeth. It has also been used in wound healing following surgical removal of jaw lesions, where it is useful as an antiseptic filler to prevent infection during healing, and for modification of the properties of endodontic sealers.

Use Of Ethanol In Cannabinoid Sciences

CBD

Cannabinoid sciences have been one of the most thriving platforms, leading the world in providing therapeutic, and potential breakthrough treatments for patients and clients seeking revolution in disease treatment. Ethanol is the essential building block for all manufacturing facilities that produce small and large quantities of CBD as a drug product.

Organic, Natural, and Nontoxic – What do These Terms Really Mean?

Organic, Natural, and Nontoxic— What do these terms really mean?

These words are frequently used on product labels (especially our beauty and cleaning products), but what do they really mean? My family looks at me a little odd when Saturday morning cleaning time rolls around. I am dressed in my old goggles from undergraduate chemistry lab, an N95 face mask, bright blue elbow-high latex gloves, […]

History of Cannabis and Modern Medicinal Use of CBD

CBD botanical extraction uses

Cannabis was one of the first plants to be used as medicine. Ancient texts from Indian Hindus, Assyrians, Greeks, and Romans indicate its use for arthritis, depression, inflammation, lack of an appetite, and asthma. The first documented use appears in Emperor Shen Nung’s book of pharmacopoeia around 2800 BC. Even in the early days of the […]

Magnesium Sulfate for Stress Relief

Nowadays, scientific studies have shown how bathing can result in less stress, anxiety, and depression compared to a regular shower. Here is where the heart of this article is:  Magnesium Sulfate, commercially known as Epsom Salts.
