What is Magnesium Silicate PR?

Magnesium Silicate PR (MagSil PR), also known as Magnesium Silicate Hydrate, is often available as a hydrate having the chemical formula MgO:XSiO2-H2O, where X denotes the average mole ratio of SiO2 to MgO. It appears as a white odorless solid and is insoluble in water. It is often produced by the precipitation reaction of water-soluble Sodium Silicate and a water- soluble Magnesium salt (like Magnesium Chloride or Nitrate).

There are various grades of Magnesium Silicate available, however, the PR grade (Pesticide Remediation) is used in the process of removing pesticides. Mag Sil PR is activated at 675oC and is widely used in industry for its pesticide removal properties. In the Botanical market, Mag Sil PR has applications in removing polar impurities, pesticides, and undesired colors as seen in color remediation columns (CRC).

How does MagSil PR work in filtration

The temperature at which magnesium silicate is activated is significant for adsorbent purposes and is indicated by the grade. Mag Sil grade A is activated at 650oC and is also known as the standard activation grade. Grade B is considered the less active grade and is activated at 260oC. PR grade is activated at 675oC and is used for pesticide remediation and the TLC grade is used in thin layer chromatography analysis.

Activated Magnesium Silicate PR is a strong decolorizer and remediator in chromatography as well as CRC (Color Remediation Columns) and is therefore used to remove undesired pigments, pesticides, and improve the clarity of extracts.

MagSil works by binding to polar, water-soluble compounds to remove them from the final oil. Due to the large surface area of the adsorbent, it can absorb unwanted contaminants quickly and efficiently. Of the adsorbents available on the market, activated MagSil is one of the more expensive filtration medias and requires additional adsorbents for optimal results.

MagSil PR grade is the one recommended for use in Botanical filtration. Due to stringent cannabis regulations, it is required that Botanical extracts pass rigorous testing. While it is ideal to avoid use of pesticides while growing and processing Botanical, this is not possible. Myclobutanil, a common chemical component used in the agricultural industry as a pesticide, can be found in Botanical extracts and while there may be undetectable levels present in the flower, it has been observed to fail test concentrations in Botanical extracts. Thus, it is imperative that further filtration of the contaminated extract is performed with MagSil PR to remove traces of pesticides.

What is CRC

CRC is a color remediation column that works with extraction systems to selectively refine the final extract resulting in better clarity, color, flavor, and aroma. It comprises of a filter plate on the bottom, a paper filter above, and a layer of filter media above that through which the crude extract is loaded onto the top of the column. In short, it is a filtration step that is used to further remove impurities from Botanical extracts. CRC is used to remove chlorophylls, carotenes, pheophytins, and lycopenes.

After the extraction process, the resulting Botanical extract is fed through a multi-stage refinement and distillation process to remove any impurities, undesired colors, and contaminants. This is where the CRC plays a role in selectively refining unwanted impurities that cause darkening of the extract. The filter media chosen is usually a mix of silica gel, activated charcoal, and MagSil PR.
